Irish History

Ireland is made of two parts. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. The capital being Belfast and has is notorious for its religion conflict issues going back centuries. The main reason behind this is the split between Irish Catholics and Irish Protestants. Bloody Sunday also known as Bogside massacre in 1972 in Derry was where 27 civil protesters were shot by the British Army with 13 dying straight away and out of them 7 were teenagers.

The Republic of Ireland is a separate country. The two biggest cities are Cork situated in the south and Dublin situated in the centre on the east coast. The population is just over 6 million. The country goes back thousands of years as far as 431 AD. Ireland formed a union with Great Britain in the 18th century after the Irish famine in 1740 with around 400,000 deaths, at the time was about a quarter of the population. Around the 1840's the Great Irish Famine killed around another 1 million people with an additional 1 million emigrating. In the 19th and 20th century Irish nationalism formed which gave the country great progress. Today the country offers some of the greatest natural views along with modern day tourist attractions and great sporting hero's.
